Today’s Episode: The God Complex

Writer: Toby Whithouse

Wow. What a complex episode. Having faith in something allows us to fear less, yet this episode touches on the idea of faith creating the fear.

We are stuck in a hotel that looks like the Shining, and no way out, since the doors are walls. Sadly no Jack Nicholson, but we do have a crazy ancient alien minotaur that kidnaps people and puts them there. Kinda like the “Cube” if you ever saw that awesome made for tv movie.   Thus we meet the key players in the lobby..

Name                    Faith                                      What was in their room

Joe                         Luck                                       Scary Howdy Doody puppets

Rita                        Muslim                                 Father being disappointed with her

Howie                   Conspiracy Theories       Girls that laughed at his stutter

Gibbons               Planet gets invaded        No idea, managed to avoid going into the rooms

Amy                       The Doctor will come      Young Amy waiting for a Doctor that didn’t arrive – Room #7

Rory                       No faith in anything        He was shown the Exit

Doctor                  WHO KNOWS???             No idea! – Room #11

So thus the minotaur goes running around killing those poor people, but they are accepting of it, as he shows them their fear, then converts that fear into faith in him, that he will make their death swift and painless, so they “Praise Him” to come to them and give them what they want.

The Doctor gets Amy, Rory and Gibbons out of there by using Amy, and this lovely conversation in Amy’s room that has her as a young girl waiting..

AMY: Doctor, it’s happening. It’s changing me, it’s changing my thoughts.

DOCTOR: I can’t save you from this, there’s nothing I can do to stop this.

AMY: What?

DOCTOR: I stole your childhood and now I’ve led you by the hand to your death. But the worst thing is, I knew. I knew this would happen. This is what always happens.

The BEAST pushes the door open, forcing RORY into the corner.

DOCTOR: Forget your faith in me.

The Beast growls.

DOCTOR: I took you with me because I was vain, because I wanted to be adored. (strokes her hair) Look at you. Glorious Pond. The girl who waited for me.

He is now speaking to AMELIA.

DOCTOR: I’m not a hero. I really am just a mad man in a box. And it’s time we saw each other as we really are.

He kisses her forehead and she is back to AMY. The BEAST staggers out the doorway.

DOCTOR: Amy Williams. (taps her on the chin) It’s time to stop waiting.

This conversation makes me sad since the Doctor has never referred to Amy as her married name, Williams, always as Pond. Rory, since traveling with the Doctor so much has made him a bit jaded, so he has no faith in anything thus being shown the exit. Then the minotaur dies, poor thing, but he does have a few last words for the Doctor..

DOCTOR: (translates) “An ancient creature, drenched in the blood of the innocent, drifting in space through an endless, shifting maze. For such a creature, death would be a gift.” (kneels and puts his hand on the BEAST’S) Then accept it. And sleep well.

The DOCTOR stands and walks away as the BEAST growls again.

DOCTOR: “I wasn’t talking about myself.”

Yup, he’s referencing the Doctor’s death in pilot episode, as we never did find out what was in the Doctor’s room, hearing the cloister bell, and him saying “Of course, Who else?” after opening a door with the #11, which he is the 11th Doctor we are aware of, this is the 11th episode of the 2011 season.

Thus the Doctor decides to drop the Ponds off at a new house he bought for them, and Rory’s favorite car! He’s “saving them” in a way,  as he doesn’t want to be standing over their graves. Amy gets it and lets him go…

Till Tomorrow when we see the Doctor working in a department store. I’m not kidding.
