Ahh 42, I like this episode. It’s a fun one, as the episode is 42 minutes long. A lot of this story harkens back to last season’s Impossible Planet/Satan Pit, such as Ten saving Martha like he saved Rose, the suit he wore, and that the Tardis was unreachable for the majority of the episode.
I loved the fact they did a “Pub Quiz” when opening the doors, especially when this occurred..
RILEY: Find the next number in the sequence: 313, 331, 367… what?
MARTHA: (scared) You said the crew knew all the answers.
RILEY: The crew’s changed since we set the questions.
MARTHA: You’re joking…
Back in the engine room, the Doctor has been working and listening in. He runs over to the intercom
THE DOCTOR: 379!
THE DOCTOR: It’s a sequence of happy primes. 379.
MARTHA: Happy what?
THE DOCTOR: Just enter it!
RILEY: Are you sure? We only get one chance!
THE DOCTOR: (slightly annoyed now, speaking at his trademark 100mph) Any number which reduces to one when you take the sum of the square of its digits and you continue iterating until it yields one is a happy number. Any number that doesn’t, isn’t. A happy prime is a number which is both happy and prime, now type it in! (Turns to McDonnell, who is climbing down a ladder. She gives him a dirty look.) I dunno, talk about dumbing down! Don’t they teach recreational mathematics anymore?
I was laughing so hard at this.. and after the episode was over when I watched it for the first time, I did actually google “Happy Primes” and discovered that such a thing actually exists.
First you look at how to make a number happy.. which is how the Doctor explained it..taking the sum of the square of its digits like so..
For example, 19 is happy, as the associated sequence is:
12 + 92 = 82
82 + 22 = 68
62 + 82 = 100
12 + 02 + 02 = 1.
It is a happy number, since the sum =1. Now if you recall what a prime number is a natural number greater than 1 that has no positive divisors other than 1 and itself. Thus what the Doctor is spouting at Martha is correct. Also quite funny when you think about it.
The “monster” they meet in this episode is kinda cool. I do think “burn with me” is not that great of a line, but the idea of something living in the sun.. who knows where life can form?
My only major issue with the episode is that how Martha knew how the status chamber worked, even though the technology is way more advanced than earth. One possible explanation is that it’s the MRI machine that she learned about in Smith and Jones just painted up for this episode, but that is just an excuse.
Anyway.. welcome aboard Chris Chibnall! His first outing with Who! I can’t wait to begin watching Broachchurch this weekend, as my friends are away in Jamaica and I have it DVRed at their home. Not to worry. I’ll still be blogging as I only live a block away.
I leave you with a frozen David Tennant.. him complaining about his makeup for the frozen scene.. not to worry, it ends with a great scene with his shirt off and saying he’s getting into the shower.. 🙂
