Today’s Episode: Father’s Day
Writer: Paul Cornell
This episode has always hit really too close to home for me. Since I lost my mum to cancer, I’ve always wondered what my life would have been like if she was still around. To create a time machine, and whoosh… right back to the moment she was first exposed to the stuff that made her cancer accelerate.. and have more time with her than I did. Alas, I cannot, as that would bring about a possible paradox. Never ever a good thing to have occur, as we learn in Father’s Day!
Now, Rose convinces the Doctor to go back to visit her Dad, as she never got the chance to really meet him and get to know him. First we visit their wedding… then she manages to convince him to go to the site of the car accident where he died, using the information that her mother told her over the years, using the excuse that no one was with him when he died, and that she wanted to be there for him. The idea of going back on your own personal timeline has always been a bit taboo on the Whoverse, and this is no exception. She gets too scared when they first do it.
Then she asks for a second try, and lo she decides to save his life rather than seeing him die again. Thus begins the temporal paradox.. and begins the possibility of the Blinovitch Limitation Field coming into play. Both of these are hugely scientific and damaging to the timelines, so whilst Rose saves her dad, and follows him back to his flat, the Doctor goes back to the Tardis after they have a huge fight about why she saved her Dad.
However the Tardis isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and, out come these monsters that begin eating everyone trying to restore the timeline. The Doctor then goes after Rose to save her, as he knows she is going to a wedding at a church, and lo the monsters kill one or two of the wedding party before going inside, as luckily the church is quite old thus keeping everyone inside safe from the monsters.
Thus when inside, the Doctor and Rose have this great little conversation..
The Doctor: The entire Earth’s being sterilized. This, and other places like it, are all that’s left of the human race. We might hold out for awhile, but nothing can stop those creatures. They’ll get through in the end; the walls aren’t that old. And there’s nothing I can do to stop them. There used to be laws stopping this kind of thing from happening – my people would have stopped this. But they’re all gone. And now, I’m going the same way.
Rose: If I’d realized…
Doctor: Just… tell me you’re sorry.
Rose: I am. I’m sorry.
Bang.. that’s it.. he forgives her for creating a paradox. They do have a failed attempt to try to bring the Tardis to them. Alas it all goes wonky when Pete tries to convince Jackie that the baby they have is the same blonde woman he’s been talking to and Rose is handed to herself.
So monsters in the church! The Doctor then sacrifices himself to save the others as he’s the oldest one in the room.. and Pete realizes what he must do, and says his goodbyes to Rose..
So, he then goes outside and dies again when the car hits him. Only this time.. Rose is there with him and says goodbye.
Thus… the timeline is restored! The Doctor is back!! Onto more Adventures!!
